What is Ballast? 

Ballast is a mixture of sharp sand and stone or gravel. It comes in two sizes, 10 mil and 20 mil. The 10 mil containing a smaller gravel mixture and the 20 mil containing larger stones. Each have different uses.

Ballast is typically not used by itself but rather mixed with water and cement to make concrete. 10 mil ballast makes for a much finer concrete ideal for using as a sub-base for a garden patio. 20 mil ballast makes a much stronger concrete. The larger stones help to bind the sand and cement creating a more rigid and harder to break structure. This type of concrete is mostly used for footings and subbases of heavy structures.
